ARSN Athletes attend Junior National ID Camp in Boston

Boston, MA - On March 29th, 3 athletes from America Rows and Swims Newburgh attended the prestigious USRowing National Junior Development ID Camp in Boston, MA, where they received coaching instruction and tips both on and off the water from USRowing's Junior National coaches and others, along with approximately 50 other athletes from around the Northeast, said Juliana LoBiondo ("Mrs. Lo") coach and Director of America Rows and Swims Newburgh.  ARSN provides grants for these and other athletes to row for the Newburgh Rowing Club.

The Boston camp was one of several USRowing Junior National ID camps held around the country in March, which are instructional with a focus on providing insight into what is required of our best rowers and coxswains and the tools to achieve success at the international level, according to USRowing.  The national team coaches demonstrated ways the athletes can improve and helped athletes discover that the junior national team is both attainable and fun, according to USRowing.

Highlights of the ID Camp program included:  a lecture called "The Junior National Team — who we are and what the selection camp and development camp are all about (open to parents and coaches);"  "The learning experience of the 2014 Junior World Championships" with a question and answer session with a member of the 2014 squad (Open to parents and coaches); Expectations and things you can do to become a more effective rower/coxswain including how to use tapes (both audio and video) for feedback, technique issues and review/demonstrations of core strengthening/circuit training exercises (open to coaches); as well as coaching both on and off the water.

"It was an amazing experience," said NFA Senior Davonte Davis, a rower who attended along with his brother, Davonte Davis, a coxswain and a sophomore at NFA  and Ariel Williams, a sophomore at NFA.  "To see this beautiful boathouse and to be coached by a national coach was a dream come true.  You could literally smell 'opportunity' coming from this program.  I am so inspired to bring everything I learned to my technique and also back to my teammates."

The trip, which included an overnight stay in Boston and a sightseeing trip, was made possible by a $1,000.00 Grant from the LoBiondo Family Foundation.  "We are always happy to help support youth rowing and swimming opportunities," said Foundation Director Mrs. Lo.
