Ergometer Relay Races for 60

America Rows Newburgh had 60 middle school rowers come to practice on a bitter cold Tuesday to participate in Relay Races on the ergometers.

"It's hard, but we had fun," said 11-year old Karla Gunera.

The coaches put the rowers through a broken 2K, followed by Calisthenics, followed by the Relay Races.

"We are learning water confidence on Mondays at the Pool and doing indoor rowing 2 days a week at the Boathouse," said Team Mom LoBiondo.  "I'm supposed to be doing Open Row with the adults but I like working out with the Nora Cronin (middle school) girls.  The coaches don't cut me any breaks, even though I'm 4 times as old as these girls!"

"This is a great program," said Programs Director Coach Kennedy, "This is exactly what a rowing program should be doing for the community."

Happy Celebration of Life Day!

HAPPY NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF LIFE DAY!  January 22nd is "Celebration of Life Day," a day when we are supposed to really appreciate all the children in our lives.  I know my life is pretty much all about the children: my own, and also my "Rowing Kids," as I like to call them, who range in age from 8 (the youngest Student Ambassadors) to 19 (Nick Bourne, Man of Steel).  Pretty much everyone I fraternize with is just as kid-centric as I am.  However, sadly, based on my "Day Job," as a family law and divorce attorney for the past 23 years, that's not the case with everyone.  For the rest of us, who really do put our kids' interests first, try to take it one step further.

Today, look at the world through the eyes of a child.  Your own children or grandchildren, or your "Inner Child," if you will.  Think of how Joyous the world is for them.  And truly ponder how difficult what we could consider the most basic tasks are for them, whether it is public speaking, getting up early, putting their face in the water for the first time, or learning to take a hit in football (believe me, it doesn't come naturally).  In other words, Celebrate Childhood and the children in your life today by slowing down, putting aside the (FILL IN THE BLANK) and really focusing on what they're saying.  Because, trust me, they just want to be heard.

This is a photo of our current and some former Student Ambassadors.  They either won or competed in a gig boat race for the first time in this picture, something most experienced rowers consider beneath them.  But these kids were so proud of themselves, and I was so proud of them too, so I put them up on the podium with the flags and took this picture.  Some day, they will be on the podium for the college or maybe for the United States.  But like Big Coach says, you have to take care of the Little People because someday they're going to be the Big People.  You also have to take care of the Little Kids because they are what matters most.  To be honest, they may not have won any medals that day, but the fact that someone made such a big deal about their gig boat race is all that mattered to them, and you can tell from the big smiles.  Have a great day,  everyone, and remember to Count Your Blessings! <3 Mrs. Lo

America Rows Newburgh's Day of Service for Martin Luther King Day

New Windsor, NY - Coaches and Competitive Rowers from the Newburgh Rowing Club spent Martin Luther King Day, January 20, 2014, at the Union Avenue Community Fitness Center, volunteering their time to teach deserving youth from the City of Newburgh and elsewhere a Water Confidence and Learn to Swim Clinic for America Rows Newburgh, said Juliana LoBiondo, Team Mom for the Newburgh Rowing Club and Director of America Rows Newburgh.

"We are delighted that three of the 30 kids we are currently teaching passed the Swim Test today," said Coach Ed Kennedy, Programs Director for the Newburgh Rowing Club and the Lead Swim Instructor.  Coach Kennedy has many years experience as a swim coach.  "We are in our 3rd year with this Water Confidence and Learn to Swim program, which will allow kids to pass the USRowing Swim Test and row on open water.  The kids accepted into the America Rows Newburgh program pay nothing."

"All of this is made possible by grants from the Hudson River Improvement Fund, and support from USRowing's America Rows Inclusion Program," said Team Mom LoBiondo.  "Really, the pictures say it all.  This program works because we have so many dedicated student volunteers getting in the water and role modeling for our young Student Ambassadors.  It was a great way to spend Martin Luther King Day, in a day of service.  But the rowers of the Newburgh Rowing Club dedicate themselves to community service year-round, I couldn't be more proud of all of our kids, from the volunteers to the brave youngsters learning to put their face in the water for the first time.  Great things continue to happen at the Newburgh Rowing Club."

Newburgh Rowing's Student Ambassador Program becomes an America Rows Affiliate

Newburgh, NY – on January 8, 2014, the Newburgh Rowing Club’s scholarship-based inclusion rowing program, the “Student Ambassador Program,” officially became a USRowing America Rows Affiliate program, said Juliana LoBiondo, Team Mom for the Newburgh Rowing Club and Director of the Student Ambassador Program, which will now be known as “America Rows Newburgh.”
“America Rows”, was launched by USRowing in 2010.  USRowing is the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States, serving to promote the sport on all levels of competition, including the selection and training of those who represent the United States at the international level.
“ ‘America Rows’ is a nationwide diversity and inclusion initiative, aimed at increasing awareness of rowing and introducing the sport to a diverse group of Americans. ‘America Rows’ provides support, both organizationally and financially, to existing and planned programs across the country,” said Richard Butler, USRowing Inclusion Manager.
“We are delighted to receive this recognition and support from America Rows,” said Coach Ed Kennedy, Programs Director of the Newburgh Rowing Club.  “We having been working to make Newburgh Rowing as inclusive as possible since its inception 22 years ago.  To have this affiliation with USRowing’s ‘America Rows’ program is just tremendous.”
“This affiliation with America Rows is nothing short of a dream come true,” said Team Mom LoBiondo.  “The Student Ambassador Program has been made possible by continued grants from the Hudson River Improvement Fund.  Through the receipt of grants, we have been able to offer membership in the Newburgh Rowing Club, and participation in training and competitions, free of charge to our Student Ambassadors.”
One of the things that makes the America Rows Newburgh program unique is the fact that the program gets kids in the Pool and teaches water confidence, said LoBiondo.

“We basically now have the support of the national governing body of rowing for our kids,” said LoBiondo.  “This means financial support, such as waiver of fees for USRowing membership and national meet entry fees for our Student Ambassadors.  We also can say we are part of a national organization, and a community of inclusion.  In the bigger picture, we now have boundless opportunities for our Student Ambassadors.  For instance, there will be an America Rows Regatta in this spring, which America Rows Newburgh has been invited to.  Our Student Ambassadors will be able to compete in this Regatta and, instead of being the only Mexican-American rowers, or the only African-American rowers, we will be surrounded by a completely diverse group of youth rowers.  I have been through so much with these kids over the past 3 years, it is unimaginable.  This is an incredible culmination of three years of hard work, and we are only going to build on it from here.  Look for America Rows Newburgh rowers to make some special headlines in the years to come.”
Boathouses across America continue to be affluent, upper middle class and white,” said Mr. Butler.  “If we want the United States to be more competitive on the world stage, we are going to need to do what many major American corporations figured out 20 years ago – become more diverse and inclusive.  We welcome America Rows Newburgh to the program.”
