America Rows Newburgh's Day of Service for Martin Luther King Day

New Windsor, NY - Coaches and Competitive Rowers from the Newburgh Rowing Club spent Martin Luther King Day, January 20, 2014, at the Union Avenue Community Fitness Center, volunteering their time to teach deserving youth from the City of Newburgh and elsewhere a Water Confidence and Learn to Swim Clinic for America Rows Newburgh, said Juliana LoBiondo, Team Mom for the Newburgh Rowing Club and Director of America Rows Newburgh.

"We are delighted that three of the 30 kids we are currently teaching passed the Swim Test today," said Coach Ed Kennedy, Programs Director for the Newburgh Rowing Club and the Lead Swim Instructor.  Coach Kennedy has many years experience as a swim coach.  "We are in our 3rd year with this Water Confidence and Learn to Swim program, which will allow kids to pass the USRowing Swim Test and row on open water.  The kids accepted into the America Rows Newburgh program pay nothing."

"All of this is made possible by grants from the Hudson River Improvement Fund, and support from USRowing's America Rows Inclusion Program," said Team Mom LoBiondo.  "Really, the pictures say it all.  This program works because we have so many dedicated student volunteers getting in the water and role modeling for our young Student Ambassadors.  It was a great way to spend Martin Luther King Day, in a day of service.  But the rowers of the Newburgh Rowing Club dedicate themselves to community service year-round, I couldn't be more proud of all of our kids, from the volunteers to the brave youngsters learning to put their face in the water for the first time.  Great things continue to happen at the Newburgh Rowing Club."
